Sunrise Project: Day 3

All I have to say about this sunrise is wow! So pretty. Wednesdays are my earliest days so seeing this made it a little more worth it! Today I am seeing one of my patients with a mental disorder. She has colorful calculus deposits so I'm excited! I scaled half of her mouth a few weeks ago and get to finish the rest today! I took a before picture and forgot to take an after picture at my halfway point so hopefully I remember today. The calculus deposits are really thick and dense!

Sunrise Project: Day 2

Today's sunrise isn't as powerful or vibrant. However, the snow on the mountains really is pretty! As ususal, this picture doesn't do the sunrise justice.
I'm actually ditching class today, whoops :) But only because I am doing volunteer work! A few classmates and I are going to a health fair this morning to perform oral cancer screenings. (I'll post about it later!) I am excited. This will be a great way to reach out to those otherwise unable to access care, possibly SAVE LIVES, and a great way to advertise ourselves and find patients! I am hopeful about finding a geriatric patient and an adolescent for requirements, though the latter is unlikely. No patients for me in clinic today- I am a facilitator!

Sunrise Project: Day 1

The sunrise is gorgeous this morning. The picture doesn't do it justice, but pictures rarely do. I am optimistic about today! I am ready for my classes and my teacher is actually going to be my patient this afternoon! Her husband is going to be my patient as well. This should be fun and I really look forward to their input! Bring it on, Monday :)

Welcome to The Road to There/The Sunrise Project!

I just realized I never wrote a welcome page! Time to correct this matter!

Why this blog??
I am honestly just starting this blog as an attempt to start journaling. In fact, my friends don't even know this blog exists yet! In fact, I don't know if they ever will! So be prepared for anything and everything to be posted! Who knows, I may have something for you :) I am temporarily changing my blog title from "The Road to There" to "The Sunrise Project" right now because I am up early enough every day to see the gorgeous sunrise. This goes under-appreciated because I am NOT a morning person, and as gorgeous as the sunrise is, I can't help but look forward to not being able to see it every day. I know I will secretly miss it so I am taking a picture of it every time I see it while driving and forcing myself to take the time to appreciate it. I am also going to be posting motivational quotes and other things. This is all because I AM BURNT OUT and really really want to stay as positive as possible through my last month and a half of school!!

But who are you??
I'm not a fan of about me pages, because I feel like they're a boring mix of "me, me, me" and "us, us, us," but allow me to introduce myself properly...

Hi, my name is Jenni!
I'm a:
  • newlywed
  • student
  • dental nerd
  • beginning blogger
and currently trying to lose weight! I enjoy everything outdoors, gardening, reading medical journals (weird, right?), trying out recipes, and working out. I am passionate about being healthy: physically, mentally, DENTALLY, and spiritually. I'm also slightly obsessed with dinosaurs, which means YES: Cabazon, California is on my bucket list and I will be visiting it shortly after graduation.

Enough about me!
I want to know about you! Feel free to say hi!

The Road to: SNOW DAY??!

There was a powerful snow storm this morning that resulted in an onslaught of afternoon patient cancellations. Dental hygiene appointments were dropping like flies which caused a panic among my classmates.  I was lucky, my patient never even considered canceling. He braved the storm for our appointment, but I felt bad for my peers! During lunch we decided the only solution was to make a list of everyone whose patients had canceled and ask Ms. Pierce for a snow day. When I went into her office to hand her the list (which contained half of our class) and beg for mercy she said that she could not give us a snow day because there was no room in our schedule to put a make up day, but she would give everyone a free no-show reversal. Problem solved! Breathe easy seniors! We are almost done!

The Road to: Giving Back! Give Kids a Smile!

One thing I love to do is give back to my community. As a student I do not have as many opportunities as I would like, in fact my options are VERY limited! So when opportunity comes along, I take it! This Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer through Henry Schein's Give Kids a Smile.

Just a little about Give Kids a Smile: In many areas, even those with mid to high income, there are underserved children going without dental treatment. GKAS was launched in 2003 for this specific need. What was initially a one day event in February has grown to local and national events year round! Dentists and other team members volunteer their time and services to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. Below you can see me placing sealants with my assistant on one of the children who showed up following our cleaning.

Together we provided free dental treatment to over 150 children in our area on Saturday. It was amazing to help enhance the oral health of needy children, and also very eye-opening to how many people lack the knowledge of not only how to care for their teeth (and their children's) but the importance of it as well. Below is a picture of all the members of my class who showed up to help!
